Neighborhood Stores / Supermarkets
Small local shops usually only have basic, everyday necessities. However, most are open very late at night and open early in the morning. The owner usually runs the store alone (or may have a few family members helping out sometimes), and it is mostly visited by people in the neighborhood. As the owner knows all the customers well, he/she may be willing to give the occasional discount or give some on the spot credit to a customer who is a little short on cash.
Although they are referred to as "Gagae (°¡°Ô)," many use different titles such "super" or "mart" in their names.
Many neighborhood stores face strong competition from convenience stores, such as Buy the Way, 7-11, Circle-K, LG25, and others. In addition to remaining open 24 hours, convenience stores have a large network behind them that can buy in large quantities and provide just-in-time delivery of items. This allows convenience stores to carry a much wider selection of items yet still not need a large area locally for storage.
Most convenience stores also offer microwave ovens to heat food and ATMs for easy access to cash, and they accept credit cards for payment.
Neighborhood specialty stores also sell clothes, bedding, curtains, electronics, plumbing supplies, and other specialty items. Other typical neighborhood businesses include video rental shops, clothes cleaners, locksmiths, and butcher shops.
Usually found near apartment buildings, supermarkets carry the usual selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats, as well as dry and canned foods. In addition, they have cleaning supplies, cooking utensils, and some even have pet food and supplies.
